The very first strides in creating mantel clocks were found in the XIV and XV centuries. Iron was the material for such clocks at that time and they were wound with the help of loads. The scheme and components were similar to usual tower clocks the same as the look.

In the XV century period clocks were inserted walls' consoles. Centuries later wooden console became the element of the clocks' frame. The style of it conformed to the whole design of the clock. In aristocratic houses it was one of the decor components of a room. In every house clocks played an important role. They were an element of the stylistic composition that was adhered to the fashion of an age. The most notable asters of applied art such as Roentgen, Goutier and Benemann, also developed the artistic appearance of their clocks. They worked on their own models and made clocks in the unique prototypes. Only at the end of the XVIII century the copies of the most remarkable models were found.
