The principal point in the housing of birds is a right nourishment for them. Birds that live at people's homes in decorative cages commonly belong to granivorous birds. But it doesn't mean that they have to eat only seeds. But in fact this sort of birds vary their ration each season in natural conditions. They may have anything including animal feed, vegetables, fruits and tree barks. So keep in mind, that if you want your bird to be strong and healthy you are to feed it with different kinds of meal.

Nowadays you can see a wide variety of bird seed in different pet shops. As you see you shouldn't feed your bird an entire year with seeds because it won't harmonize with their natural nutrition.

There are many different cases when birds have the same forage for years and nothing happens, but diseases not always reveal themselves in a quick way. Scientists observe such illnesses as the malfunction of molt, obesity, disorder of the reproductive function etc. All these cases are conditional on wrong feeding of birds. Vitamins and proteins are also needed for the birds' organism because without them various infective diseases will appear.

So the basis of a bird's meal contains grain blends. But the composition of the mixture must be of different crops (wheat, oats, millet, maize and so on) and seeds (canary seed, herbage seeds, seeds of lettuce) because it is very important to keep your bird robust. Of course there should be oil-yielding seeds such as sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, hemp seed and various nuts. But these kinds of seeds should be added in a small amount because overdose of oil-yielding seeds is the reason of overweight.

A number of crop feed should correspond to the daily norm of your bird. For example canary's standard is one teaspoon, budgerigar would eat 2 teaspoon a day etc.

Fresh feed consists of various greeneries, wild herbage, fruits, vegetables, also fresh leaves and branches of trees. And, of course you have to add animal forage to the bird's meal. You can feed your bird with boiled hen's eggs, fatless cottage cheese and small amount of minced meat. These feeds are given to a bird once a week, in moult period - twice a week and only in the period of nestling - every day. In the bird's cage should be also present a feeder with chalk or small stones, they are necessary for a normal digestion.
